Developing Pharmaceuticals Complying With FDA Compliance
When asked what affects their life in a major way, very few people would cite pharmaceuticals as a factor. However, from birth to death we rely on medicines in one way or another. Definitely by age our dependence on pharmacy products increases but even teenagers and young ones consume a big percentage of pharmaceutical derivatives. FDA Compliance ensures that the drugs we take are as safe as possible.
Many people’s daily lives are affected by pharmaceuticals. So it is obvious that the rising cost of medicines will concern us. The ever growing prices of pharmaceutical products severely pinches one’s pocket, but it is not a commodity that can be ignored. If a person is suffering from a certain disease and the doctor prescribes him a medicine, he must purchase it whether it suits his pocket or not. There needs to be some regulation over the cost of medicines so that patients are not getting ripped off. As of now many market leaders are found to price their monopoly drugs at a very high rate.
Big pharmaceutical players in the market also pay much attention to research and development of new medications. R & D uses up millions of pounds of a company’s money every year. Businesses want to find a drug which can cure many ailments. And once any company hopes to have created any new medicine it has to pass through many different stages to get the approval of the drug controlling authority, FDA. FDA Compliance has to be reached by any new medicines before they are given to patients and this includes during research, development and production. Only once the drug has been approved by the FDA can it enter the market.
Animal and human tests are conducted on the drugs before they are given to the FDA for approval. These tests confirm the effectiveness of the medicine and makes sure that the invented drug does not have any serious side effects. All this research work is necessary so that the ultimate consumer gets nothing but the best.
As the pharmaceutical industry grows on a worldwide scale there is much more competition. In order for companies to have a fair chance, the marketing of drugs is also regulated by the FDA.
GMP Auditing And Dangerous APIs
We are affected by medicines because of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients or API which is in them. Some companies have a patent which means the quality of the API is maintained however off-patent drugs means that this is not always the case. Some companies have turned to using falsifies substandard APIs in their drugs they manufacture so that they can lower production costs and maintain profits.
many of these falsified APIs do not go through GMP auditing and so it is unknown of they contain toxic chemicals. One of the main problems with knowing whether the API in a drug is falsified or not is because of the long supply chain that many medicines go through before they reach their final market. Outsourcing their work to India and China is another way that some companies have saved money due to cheaper labour. With so many factors to the production of the drugs, it is hard to audit every step of the process.
It has been estimated that 20-30% of all off-patent drugs in Europe contain falsified APIs and in Britain, 80% of our medicines contain APIs which were produced in India or China.
These percentages add up to a huge number of drugs entering the EU market and the results could be hundreds or thousands of health issues. Toxic APIs could end up having deathly consequences in some patients. Reactions with other medication or accidental overdose are just two of the scenarios that might occur.
Over the past 10 years the results of GMP Auditing has uncovered a rise in the number of substandard APIs coming from Indian and Chinese manufacturers. Whilst inspecting 160 manufacturers in these two countries the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and healthcare suspended or withdrew 50 GMP certificates. This is a huge percentage and the EDQM predicts that these figures will continue to grow.
GMP auditing is the only way to catch the producers of falsified APIs and it is one of the most important aspects of the pharmaceutical industry. But it is a moral issue that companies are prepared to release substandard and potentially fatal drugs onto the market all in the name of bigger profit margins.
A True Tale of Canadian Health Care: Why some patients need to go to the U.S. for surgery
Many advocates of health-care reform are admirers of Canada’s state-run, no-opt-out, single-payer system. Indeed, in 2003, President Barack Obama voiced enthusiasm for such a health-care program. Proponents of Canadian-style health care should meet Cheryl Baxter, a Canadian citizen who waited years for hip-replacement surgery, only to be told that her operation would not happen any time soon. Instead of waiting, Baxter did what an increasing number of Canadians are doing: She flew to a …
