Can Sunshine Prevent Multiple Sclerosis

Over the last few years we have all been swamped with messages about how exactly important it is to be out of the sun. We’ve realized precisely how real a risk skin cancer can be and are doing every little thing we can think of to prevent it from happening. We slather on layers and layers of the greatest SPF sunscreens that we can find. We have on big floppy hats. We use long sleeves in addition to pant legs even in the warmest of temperatures. We try and stick to the shady areas—some people have even taken to carrying parasols around with them to keep the sun from ever making contact with their skin. Now we’re beginning to find out that sunlight can sometimes be really helpful. Can you truly be helped by the sunshine? Learning how to lose weight fast can be difficult since there is so much info out there.

A new analysis has demonstrated that people who allow themselves some sun exposure are less likely to develop MS than those who try to minimize their sun exposure. Originally the analysis was to see how Vitamin D impacted the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Eventually it became apparent, however, that it was the Vitamin D our bodies generate as a response to exposure to the sun’s rays that seems to be at the root of the issue. Losing weight can be a difficult task if you are not prepared.

We’ve known for a very long time that sunlight and Vitamin D can slow down the way the immune system plays a role in MS. This study, on the other hand, focuses on the affects of sunlight on those who are experiencing the very earliest symptoms of the disease. The goal of the study is to observe how sunlight and Vitamin D might have an affect on the symptoms doctors call “precursor” to actual symptoms of the disease.

Sadly, right now there aren’t truly very many ways that really prove whether or not the hypothesis of this study are true. The goal of the study is to determine if sunlight can actually prevent the disease. Unfortunately, the scientists discovered, the only way to that is to watch people over the course of their lives. This is just about the only solution to really evaluate the levels of Vitamin D that are already present in a person’s blood before the precursors to MS start to become apparent. The way it stands now, and has stood (widely recognized) for a long time is that people who live in warm and sunny climates and who get more exposure to direct sunshine are less likely to develop MS than those who live in dark or cold climates and get very little exposure to the sun.

There is also the very important issue that spending a lot of time in the sun greatly increases a person’s chances of developing skin cancer. So, if you try and prevent one disease, there’s a chance you’re helping to induce the other one. Of course, if you catch skin cancer early enough you are far more likely to cure it. MS still has no cure.

So should you receive more sunlight to counteract MS from setting in? Talk to your physician to figure out if this is a good idea. Your health care provider can look at your current health status, your medical history and even your genetics to determine if you are even at risk for the disease in the first place. This will help your doctor figure out exactly what the best thing for you to do is.
