Hard-working woman opposes health care reform, encourages civility

Teresa Winston works at Do-Drop-In, a popular sandwich shop and service station that also has really great coffee! Do-Drop-In is a gathering place for residents of Danville, Virginia who — although most refused to go on camera — in general seemed to agree with Teresa that states rights were more important than federal government initiatives, and that Americans must remain vigilant to protect our freedoms.

This woman is incredibly confused. She does not realize how callous she is when she ignors the suffering of 50 million people without healthcare. It is probable that she is relying on the money her father made as a tobacco farmer for her healthcare. The other 50 million do not have that luxury.
The government spends 1 trillion a year on national defense, murdering thousands of innocent people with high tech weapons. Insuring every citizen actually produces savings in the long run.,

She uses personal language, about people not having common sense. Not what the Coffee Party is about. Good points about freedom of speech, though. So she gets a few points for that.

Love this lady. I wish more conservatives would be like her! Most politicians these days are just noise. Even though I disagree, she approaches her argument in a very sensible way. No, Republicans and Democrats will never completely reconcile. But the least they can do is listen to each other. Thank you Coffee Party!

Funny she lost jobs due to other people’s medical bankruptcies, yet opposes reform that would eliminate that. And if you can’t afford to cover everyone, how will you afford a medical bankruptcy where they take everything you’ve got?

We already tried letting people voluntarily take care of each other. That left her former employers with nothing and her out of a job. If she’s out of work, she can’t help others. Duh. Let’s move away from proven failures of the past.

I really love the fact I can log on and see opposing viewpoints on a particular subject and not hear the normal rantings from the right. (I.E. demonizing the words “Liberal” and “Progressive” ect.) But we have to be careful. Just because somebody doesn’t agree with our opinions, doesn’t make them an idiot. All we can do is present the FACTS in a civilized way, then assume that the recipient is a functioning human being capable of cognitive reasoning. And we have to be able to listen ourselves.

To me this is what the Coffee Party is all about. People with different views talking to one another with respect, and having a real conversation about political and social issues.

I don’t agree with all of what she said, but I feel I could at least have a civil discussion with this lady because I think she would at least listen to what I had to say, even if she disagreed with me.

This woman is NOT part of the Coffee party. She does not represent the coffee partys ideals. Coffee party would never BLAME someone for a mistake or talk down on someone in that voice. This video should be removed.

  11. #11 by coffeepartyusa on March 19, 2010 - 2:57 am

I’m not sure I see the a good reason to remove this video. Teresa has earned the right to speak her mind and we’re glad to have offered her the opportunity. We don’t agree with everything she says, but we respect her right to say it, and we recognize that even if we disagree we all part of the same national community, with common goals and common hopes.

@coffeepartyusa People don’t want to hear this kinda stuff lol. She is a polite Tea Partier. Thumbs down!

  13. #13 by blueBlackpurple on March 20, 2010 - 5:51 pm

Even though I don’t agree with this woman, I think the Coffee Party would not be true to its mission if it did not allow her to voice her opinion.

The Tea Party is the party that shouts down those they do not agree with. The Coffee Party is much better than than.

While I do think that many of us who are progressive should NEVER back down from what we believe in, it is important that we at least include others in the dialogue in order to have a full and comprehensive discussion.

You will soon find the amout of ” Sheep in wolves clothing” that is already infiltraiting the coffee party. While others in the coffee party believe that this woman should be allowed a voice that is in total disagreement with this party, I think that this arguement that she “presents” is just another sound bite that is rampant in the News/Tea bagger party.

  15. #15 by edsweb7 on March 20, 2010 - 7:19 pm

While she is within an Americans right of free speech, I don’t feel it’s appropriate to give her an avenue on the “dime” of a party that is set up to disagree with that.; If the “coffee” party thinks that they need to voice the opposite position when it is already abundant and overly publicised, then I believe that I could not support such an organization. This shows the “direct” infiltration into this organization.

To think that this Health Care bill is anything that she say’s it is, is to just NOT Adhere to the facts that have already been established by the CBO and common sence knowledge. It’s as though you now have taken on an infant child to persuade.

Go it alone, sweety. Most every developed nation on earth has this basic right. We are our brother’s keeper because we are our brother’s brother. It’s not mandated–we want to do this. We are doing this out of a sense of what’s right. It’s time we did this. You are astoundingly lucky in your tightrope walk. Good luck.

    @edsweb7,

I think many progressives are more accommodating than conservatives when it comes to listening to different points of view.

Some see this as a weakness of progressives, and some see it as a strength.

I think the Coffee Party can be a strong voice for progressives / liberals because their voices and opinions can be as strong as they want to make it in this Party.

I hope you continue to participate in the Coffee Party movement because we need to hear your opinions.

  21. #21 by blueBlackpurple on March 21, 2010 - 7:34 pm

    @edsweb7

There may be some Tea Party people of good will who might be interested in the Coffee Party and hearing different points of view.

However, I’m sure there will be some Tea Party members, or people who support their ideas, who will try and infiltrate the Coffee Party in order to cause chaos or otherwise be destructive.

That is all the more reason that we need a lot of progressives and other civil minded people in the Coffee Party to keep things civil and productive.

Poor woman, she will jump off the cliff for her believes, soon she’ll be elegible for medicare, good for you what about the rest of us? you are almost out we are very much alive and trying to be productive tax payers, corporations have no interest what so ever in our health but to maximize the profits for it’s share holders and you lady had been denied a basic right.

I think a large percentage of the US population works very hard; so that’s not the main issue. The main issue comes down to: Is our country living outside its means by spending money on healthcare?

In my opinion, people need healthcare as much as you need food. You may be able to go longer without it, but we all worry about unforeseen circumstance. So it’s not a huge stretch to do whatever it takes to live.

  24. #24 by Venue0309 on March 22, 2010 - 9:25 pm

Also, in my opinion, people who work hard all their lives deserve healthcare because without them, people with money would still have to pick their own corps, mow their own lawns, walk their own dog, etc. So rewarding people who contribute to society does more than just maintains the value of a dollar and hard work, but it also keeps us all responsible and society intact.

  25. #25 by Venue0309 on March 22, 2010 - 9:28 pm

@Venue0309 People should not have to wait for a handout when they are in their greatest need. They should be able to contribute to their own healthcare and receive needed subsidizes over several years, rather than rake up a 100k emergency bill, all at one time, and bankrupt themselves and others. That’s is fair for everyone and keeps people’s dignity.
